Description
Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) was a British educator who devoted her life to developing revolutionary methods that improved the quality of education for children in her day. Those methods have had a ripple effect all the way into the homes of homeschoolers today.
One of the practices Miss Mason’s students enjoyed keeping a “Book of Centuries.” While I loved the idea, my family found that a lot has happened since her students kept their books and there just wasn’t as much room to record what we wanted if we spaced the dates out by century.
In keeping with the same motive, we’ve developed a timeline book that pays homage to Miss Mason’s idea while providing more room for documenting. That means in the ancient world you’ll see the dates span a lot longer than they do in other time periods, and by the modern world, the student can record his findings by decade making for a more personalized experience.
There is plenty of creative space provided for your student to document his findings. Here are just a few ideas on how to use the Timeline Book:
- sketch an important person and note a few of his/her accomplishments
- draw a map
- copy a poem, quote, or speech
- illustrate an idea
- describe the landscape of an area or a people group
- draw a timeline that stretches throughout the book
- make a bulleted list of memorable people (composers, artists, explorers, etc.)
- draw a family tree
- retell a favorite story
- make a graphic novel page of an event
- draw a bookshelf containing favorite books written during that time period
No matter how your student fills out his or her book, I hope it will become a favorite way to interact with history and enjoy God’s story.
