Traditions are an important part of life. When I was little, my mom started an end of the school year tradition with me that I loved dearly and still appreciate today. She would take me out to lunch after the last day of school. Usually it was A & W to get a root beer float and I remember those times vividly.
I was determined to carry on the tradition of the end of the school year celebration with my own children. Because of our special diet, we don’t go to A & W (oh how I miss you!!) but we do celebrate with food. Sometimes it’s out to eat at a restaurant (a HUGE deal for a family with four young children…you can imagine this is a blue moon occasion for us) but this year the boys wanted a picnic at the park.
On the last day of school, I packed up some hot dogs that I had made and wrapped in foil to keep warm (K for ketchup, if you’re wondering ;)), some cut-up watermelon, chips and juice boxes and we headed out to the park.
It was a perfect day – the sun was gorgeous and it wasn’t too hot. This weather is a luxury in Alabama ;). It was simple and we had a great time. After lunch, they played chase, climbed trees, went down the slide, and swung on swings.
There are many parks to choose from where we live, which is one of my favorite things about this city. We are fortune enough to live near the Tennessee River so we chose the park on the water.
We even got to see the train that runs along the river while we were there.
We have many traditions in this family but I have to say the end of the year lunch is one of my favorites.
